A few years back, I posed a question to a group of British readers on a Goodreads forum, seeking their perspective on what they enjoyed about my writing. The clarity of their response left me astounded. The unanimous consensus? They were captivated by the Southern setting and the vibrant characters that inhabited it.

The allure of the American South is undeniable. The region is rich in distinctive values, customs, and a dialect that sets it apart from the rest of the country. These elements weave a magnetic tapestry that not only engages readers but also leaves them hungry for more.

Southern fiction, as an art form, goes beyond mere creativity or something one can acquire through education. It is a way of life that requires the creator to be intrinsically rooted in the culture and ethos of the American South. The connection to the region must flow through the author’s veins, making it a part of who they are. This is what I mean by saying that you must be “Southern by birth” to write true Southern fiction. Recently, I was asked by a very talented and award-winning English writer, “How does one go about writing Southern fiction?”. “To write true Southern fiction”, I answered, “You must be born and raised in the American South; it’s not something that you can learn.”
