A few years back, I posed a question to a group of British readers on a Goodreads forum, seeking their perspective on what they enjoyed about my writing. The clarity of their response left me astounded. The unanimous consensus? They were captivated by the Southern setting and the vibrant characters that inhabited it.

The allure of the American South is undeniable. The region is rich in distinctive values, customs, and a dialect that sets it apart from the rest of the country. These elements weave a magnetic tapestry that not only engages readers but also leaves them hungry for more.

Southern fiction, as an art form, goes beyond mere creativity or something one can acquire through education. It is a way of life that requires the creator to be intrinsically rooted in the culture and ethos of the American South. The connection to the region must flow through the author’s veins, making it a part of who they are. This is what I mean by saying that you must be “Southern by birth” to write true Southern fiction. Recently, I was asked by a very talented and award-winning English writer, “How does one go about writing Southern fiction?”. “To write true Southern fiction”, I answered, “You must be born and raised in the American South; it’s not something that you can learn.”

All genres have their guidelines, and Southern Fiction is no exception. A bona fide Southern fiction novel must exhibit 13 essential characteristics. To understand the 13 essentials, please follow the link to my blog: “ Why I Write Southern Literature.”

CLIPPED WINGS, my best-selling novel, is an authentic Southern Fiction story woven with all 13 essential characteristics, making it a perfect example of the genre.

The Charm of Southern Values

Hospitality and Community

The South is known for its welcoming spirit and sense of community. Sharing food, exchanging favors, and assisting one another are part of everyday life. These little anecdotes, told with a hint of pride, not only showcase such interactions but also make the reader feel part of something larger, something more beautiful and meaningful to them all. These interactions with people who love their Southern home like we do fill their lives with so much value and happiness, and make them want to become better people themselves to live up to the community they are a part of.

Tradition Meets Modernity

The South is a place where tradition is cherished, yet change is embraced. This creates a wonderful dichotomy for storytelling. The characters are us. This allows the reader to see how we might handle situations with that old-world charm mixed with the struggles we all experience as time moves ever forward. Plus, it gives the story room to explore how traditions can shape who we are and how we change them as we adapt to the demands of a rapidly changing world.

The Richness of Southern Customs

Food as Culture

Southern food is more than a culinary experience; it’s a rich tapestry of culture and tradition. From crispy fried chicken to gumbo and golden-brown cornbread, each dish has a story to tell. When a tale weaves in culinary traditions, it resonates on multiple levels. The reader can taste the words on the page, evoking emotions and creating a deep connection with the characters and their Southern roots.

Festivals and Celebrations

The South is known for its vibrant festivals that celebrate everything from music to agriculture. These events bring communities together, fostering a sense of regional pride. Incorporating such celebrations into storytelling not only enriches the plot but also allows readers to partake in the joy and camaraderie these festivities bring.

The Unique Dialect of the South

Language as Identity

The Southern dialect, as diverse as the region’s landscapes, plays a significant role in narratives set in the area. Its musicality can be inspiring, adding depth and richness to the storytelling experience. These unique phrases, whether common sayings or taking other linguistic forms, paint vivid pictures of sprawling fields and bustling towns.

Authenticity Through Dialogue

When characters use the true dialects of the South, it adds dimension to their personalities and backgrounds. Dialogue becomes a tool for establishing authenticity within the narrative. You, as the reader, appreciate it when a writer gets it right and honors these special dialects that are not only a way of speaking but a way of life for people of the South.
